Getting started in Dental Sleep Medicine is challenging. There are plenty of continuing education opportunities to learn clinical skills but they all leave one question unanswered.
How do I bill medical insurance?
When it doesn’t get answered, doctors usually go in one of three directions.
- Avoid insurance all together and see less patients
- Hire a billing company to do it for them while giving up 10% or more of collections
- Bang their head on the wall trying to figure it out themselves
All three options can lead to frustration which causes doctors to quit before they’ve even gotten started, essentially wasting the many hours and thousands of dollars spent learning dental sleep medicine.
There has to be a better way…and THIS is it!
Instead of jumping in the deep end, let’s try wading into the shallow end first to get your feet wet and build confidence. The way we do this is to start by only billing insurance for Medicare patients. Getting enrolled with Medicare can be a long and complicated process but once completed, billing Medicare is pretty straight forward.
Medicare’s rules, though many, are fairly well laid out and payments don’t vary from patient to patient and plan to plan. (They do vary amongst geographical regions but since you probably only live in one state, this isn’t an issue.) There is only one code to bill and payments are made relatively quickly. Referring physicians LOVE it when we see Medicare patients because many providers don’t and then they don’t have anywhere to refer these patients. This could also open up doors to referrals for other patients as well.
We will help you with enrolling as a Medicare DME provider. It’s faster and easier to do it right the first time rather than struggling through returned applications or denials. We know which documents you need and all the steps to take to make this process as easy and time efficient as possible.
Once you are enrolled and registered as a Medicare DME provider, we will submit claims on your behalf. Medicare requires claims be filed electronically, which is done with the use of a clearinghouse. Our clearinghouse is already established and we can get your account set up quickly so you can start filing claims.
Here’s how we are different from other medical billing companies. If you want to just do a few appliances a month, we are thrilled to bill those claims for you for as long as you want. But if you fall in love with dental sleep medicine and want to treat a lot of patients, including those with commercial insurance, we will HELP you bring the billing into your own office and take control of it. We can teach you all of the how-to’s of medical billing and the skills you need to do it yourself. And when you’re comfortable and ready, your clearinghouse account can be transferred over to you and then you will have FULL ownership over your medical billing.

And then those thousands of patients that could have been helped go without the care they so desperately need. We want to help great dentists overcome the insurance and billing hurdles so they can avoid the trap of sleep becoming a very expensive hobby and HELP MORE PEOPLE.
ABOUT ME
About 7 years ago, I fell in love with dental sleep medicine and dove in head first. (More like cannonballed off the high dive) Lots of continuing education prepared me clinically but my biggest obstacle was getting patients to say yes. I decided that working with medical insurance was the answer but I quickly learned that it could be really difficult. I hired a billing company to help but found myself frustrated with long wait times for benefits checks and billing claims and then still had to give away hundreds of dollars on each claim for the biller’s fees. In fact, I got irritated enough that I learned how to do it myself and became an expert in medical billing.
But my story of frustration is not unique. I HATE seeing great dentists quit due to billing issues. I want all of the great doctors out there to succeed and to treat more people, and this is why I started teaching other offices how to bill medical insurance. I already took the hard road, paid the stupid tax(es) and reached capacity on wine, head banging and cuss words. It brings me so much joy to help others do this quicker and easier than I did!
